The 1840 Springfield Musket was a smoothbore, muzzle-loading musket used by the United States during the mid-19th century. It was manufactured by the Springfield Armory in Massachusetts and was primarily used by infantry soldiers during the Mexican-American War and the Civil War.
The musket had an overall length of 56 inches and weighed around 10 pounds. It had a .69 caliber smoothbore barrel that was 42 inches long, and it fired a round lead ball. The musket had an effective range of around 100 yards.
The 1840 Springfield Musket was equipped with a percussion lock system that eliminated the need for a flintlock. It also featured a bayonet lug, allowing soldiers to attach a bayonet for close combat.
While the 1840 Springfield Musket was effective, it was eventually replaced by the 1855 Springfield Musket, which was a rifled musket that fired conical bullets rather than round balls. Nonetheless, many soldiers continued to use the 1840 Springfield Musket throughout the Civil War, particularly those in reserve units or in training.
